Xie finds belongingness helps increase high school student motivation
TDAI affiliate Kui Xie is lead author of a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology that found that high school students’ academic motivation tends to increase over time, and that increasing their sense of “belongingness” at school can help with that change. “This may be one area where we can help students become more motivated,” said Xie, Ted and Lois Cyphert Distinguished Professor and professor of learning technologies in the Department of Educational Studies. “Belongingness is something schools can change. They can find ways to help students feel like they are part of the school community.”
