NSF/NIFA grant to advance plant-level modeling for ultra-precision agriculture

TDAI core faculty Darren Drewry, assistant professor in Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, is part of a multi-institutional research project entitled COntext Aware LEarning for Sustainable CybEr-agricultural systems (COALESCE) that has received a five-year, $7 million Cyber-Physical Systems Frontier award from the NSF and the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

The project, led by Iowa State, seeks to advance ultra-precision agricultural practices for farmers using artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics that enable sensing at the individual plant level. Drewry, who studies the interaction of terrestrial land surface and lower atmosphere using modeling, simulation and remote sensing, will develop digital twins of agricultural systems for the project using a Multi-Layer Canopy model he developed previously.
